Matata Africa is a group of talented young men and women, based in Kayole, and performing acrobatic shows all over Kenya. This dynamic band of local youths are a testimony to the fact that where you are born doesn’t decide who you are. In an area notorious for crime, drugs and low-life themes, they are defying the odds, reaching for the stars and bringing the next generation with them.
In conjunction with the professional performances, Matata Africa teach a group of children (as young as 6 years!) with after-school and holiday activities. This gives the children a positive and re-enforcing activity to engage in rather than playing on the streets. One of the instructors was keen to point out that: “We also mentor them as they grow in all sorts of issues that we have also faced along life's road.”
Given an extremely high population of local children, the few public spaces and the lack of opportunity to recreate or learn skills, idling on the streets and getting into trouble is by far Kayole’s most popular pastime. Matata Africa’s after-school & holiday programs teach children to perform acrobatic maneuvers including human towers, flips, juggling, and riding unicycles. The children are learning valuable life skills also including teamwork & perseverance in a fun and health environment.
The Matata Africa team are keen to advance to the next level, to build capacity, to implement better safety and to reach more children with this great artistic sport. For more information on the group and for booking events, or to get involved, just click one of the buttons below.
